Rainfall is heavy in Chennai, and the weather department predicts more in the state over the next six days.
Chennai experienced intense rains that caused flooding in a number of areas. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are under an orange alert from the weather service, with significant rainfall predicted through December 5. Moving toward the Bay of Bengal, a low pressure system over the Andaman Sea is probably going to turn into a depression. It is expected to rain heavily in isolated areas along the coast and in nearby districts.
Wednesday saw sporadic heavy rains in Chennai,
according to the weather service.
Perungudi resulted in sluggish traffic, and public
works personnel dispersed to clear stagnant water.
Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam stations in Chennai
received 23 mm and 9 mm of rain, respectively, from 8.30 on Wednesday morning
until 5.30 pm. With 26 mm of rain, Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu received
the most.
An orange alert was in effect until late Wednesday
night in up to 25 districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and the districts
that border it, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram.
Up until December 5, the weather service has predicted significant rainfall in Chennai and other districts. The neighboring Puducherry and Tamil Nadu have been placed under an orange alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) due to the likelihood of rainfall between December 2 and 3, with amounts ranging from 115 to 204 mm.
This is because on Wednesday, a low pressure system
over the Andaman Sea moved to form a distinct low pressure area over the south
Bay of Bengal. According to the regional meteorological center (RMC) in
Chennai, "it is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a
Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal on November 30."
From Wednesday
through December 2, isolated periods of intense rain are predicted over the
coastal and surrounding districts. On December 2 and 3, isolated, extremely
heavy rain is also predicted over Chennai and the north coastal region of Tamil
Nadu.
